"Song of Everlasting Regret" was composed by Wei Hanzhang and Huang Zi based on Bai Juyi's poem of the same name. It has ten movements. "The Fishing Birds Stirring the Earth" is the third movement, and "Mountains in the Void" is the eighth movement.

Huang Zi

Huang Zi (1904～1938) Chinese composer. A native of Chuansha, Jiangsu Province (now part of Shanghai City), he was born on March 23, 1904 and died in Shanghai on May 9, 1938. In 1916, he entered Tsinghua School in Beijing and began to be exposed to Western music. He participated in the school band and chorus and studied piano and vocal music. In 1924, he went to the United States to study psychology. In 1926, he entered the Oberlin Conservatory of Music to study composition. In 1928, he entered the Yale University School of Music. Composed, graduated in 1929 with a bachelor's degree in music. The graduation work orchestral overture "Nostalgia" was performed at the college. This is the first symphonic music work created by a Chinese composer. After returning to China in 1929, he taught at Hujiang University.

In 1930, he served as professor of composition theory and director of academic affairs at Shanghai National Music College. Since 1931, he has composed many Anti-Japanese War songs, such as "Anti-Enemy Song", "The Flag is Flying", etc. In 1934, he founded "Music Magazine" with Xiao Youmei and others. In 1937, he resigned from his teaching position and devoted himself to writing professional teaching materials. He advocated the path of national music creation in music creation and explored the national style of music. His music creation is mainly vocal music, and his works are skillful in composition techniques, express emotions delicately, and have high artistic quality. His representative works include the oratorio "Song of Everlasting Sorrow", the songs "Red Lips", "Nanxiangzi", "Three Wishes of a Rose", etc. He also presided over and actually participated in the compilation of "Fuxing Junior High School Music Textbook" (a total of 6 volumes) .

Wei Hanzhang (1905～1993)

Wei Hanzhang is my country's first generation of lyric masters engaged in modern song creation. Since writing his debut work "Homesickness" in 1932 while working at the Shanghai National Music College, he has composed more than 500 lyrics in his life, including the anti-Japanese songs "The Flag is Flying", "Hometown of White Clouds", and the art song "The Ballad of Picking Lotus" ”, “The Mayweeds Bloom Everywhere”, the oratorio “Song of Everlasting Sorrow”, etc.

Wei Hanzhang not only engages in lyrics creation, but also takes the lead in theoretical research on lyric creation. As early as the 1930s, he had proposed the combination of "song and music", and it was he who first proposed the term "lyrics".

This young man with a rich family became poor and ill in his later years and lived in a nursing home. He relied on the support of relatives, friends and students to make ends meet. In this harsh environment, his greatest wish is still to "pass down the virtues to future generations", which makes people feel sad and full of admiration.
