Introduction to Indian Music

Indian music is theoretically subdivided into 22 micro-intervals (Sruti) in an octave, so the pitch has very subtle changes. Instead of using a fixed pitch, the singer will improvise according to the characteristics of his or her voice. Indian music has two formulas since ancient times, one is "raga", which is a melody formula, and the other is "tala", which is a rhythm formula.

The neck of the sitar is very long, and the fingerboard has 16 to 18 movable ring-shaped metal frets to indicate the position of the melody strings. It has 4 to 7 metal strings and two sustained tone strings (no need to fret the strings, but each one only produces a single tone). There can be 11 to 13 metal resonating strings below it, each tuned to a different pitch. , vibrating with the melody strings and sustaining strings to enhance resonance.
