Shalyapin (1873～1938) Shalyapin, Fyodor Ivanovich

Russian bass singer. Born in Kazan on February 13, 1873 and died in Paris on April 12, 1938. In 1890 he joined the local opera troupe and in 1892 he went to Tbilisi to study under D. Usatov. In 1896, he joined the Moscow Mamontov Opera Company and became famous for playing some major opera roles. From 1899 to 1914, he was an actor at the Bolshoi Theater. He debuted on the stage at La Scala in Milan in 1901 and won international fame. He settled in Paris in 1921 and often performed in opera houses in the United States and Britain. In 1935, he visited China. He is an artist with originality. His performance is highly integrated with characters, language and singing. His voice is resonant, wide and expressive. He has sung "Volga Boatman", starred in the movies "Ivan the Terrible" and "Don Quixote", has recorded nearly 200 albums, and is the author of "A Page of My Life" and "The Mask and the Man" Waiting for books. Chaliapin is known as the "King of Bass Singers". His vocal range is wide, his timbre is colorful and flexible, his voice can be used from fortissimo to pianissimo, and he can use falsetto, semi-falsetto, laughter, and crying. The transitions were flawless. Chaliapin was especially charming when singing Russian national opera roles, his most charismatic role being Godonov.
