About the Author:

He Luting (1903.7.20-1999.4.27), a native of Shaodong, Hunan, is an outstanding people's musician, a famous composer, music theorist and music educator. Comrade He Luting has been engaged in music work for 76 years. As a famous composer, he composed 3 cantata, 6 operas in different forms (two of which were co-written with others), 5 drama scores, nearly 200 songs, 25 choruses, There are 5 piano pieces, 7 orchestral pieces, 27 movie music and some instrumental solo pieces, many of which are masterpieces handed down from generation to generation.

The story behind "Senjidma"

Legend has it that a long time ago, there was a smart and beautiful Mongolian girl named Senjidema who fell in love with a hard-working young man. Unfortunately, their love was thwarted and Senjidema was forced to marry into a rich man's family. The young man missed her day and night and often came from far away to linger by her house, but could not see her. One day, they finally broke through all the obstacles and met each other, but Senjidema unfortunately passed out. According to legend, the song "Senjidma" was composed by this young man. He sang as he walked home and wrote the lyrics on the roadside and on the walls of the hotel. He was devastated by the loss of his beloved, and finally committed suicide by jumping off a cliff.

Music appreciation

This is a Mongolian short-key folk song popular in the Ordos tribe of Yikezhao League in Inner Mongolia. Through a series of vivid metaphors, it depicts Senjidma's beauty and highlights the young man's unwavering love for the girl. The whole song is based on a slow and leisurely rhythm like the sound of horse hooves, with the first phrase as the seed tone. The melody is sometimes high-pitched and passionate, like a young man calling loudly; sometimes it is sad and gentle, like a low cry. Finally, it ends with a chorus-like and emotionally general additional melody, which not only highlights the young herdsmen's longing for Senjidma, but also deepens the loneliness and desolation of the music.

Introduction to music

Like other Ordos folk songs, the music of this piece is mainly based on the pentatonic scale. This folk song is in the palace mode of the pentatonic scale, and the seventh tone is just an occasional passing tone. The melody lines have great ups and downs and the emotions are full of changes. This kind of melody is suitable for expressing the vast, comfortable and unrestrained musical image and the generous character of the Mongolian people. Composer He Luting adapted it into an orchestral piece, very delicately portraying the image of the pure and beautiful Senjidma, and at the same time portraying the inner world of the lovesick young man.

Refers to other types of works performed by orchestras other than concertos and symphonies. Orchestras are usually composed of different instruments such as strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
