The concept of propagation by cuttings

Cutting propagation refers to a propagation method that uses plant vegetative organs that have the ability to regenerate and can produce adventitious buds or roots. Parts of their stems, leaves, and roots are cut and inserted into sand or other substrates to allow them to take root or sprout into new plants.

Characteristics of cutting propagation

Advantages: It grows faster than sown seedlings and blooms earlier. It can maintain the genetic information of the original variety and is conducive to cultivating excellent strains. For dioecious plants such as ginkgo and bayberry, male or female plants can be purposefully propagated through cuttings. Variation types of some rare flowers can also be preserved through cuttings. Cheap, quick, easy and shortens seedling growth time.

Disadvantages: Cutting seedlings have no main root, the root system is long, and sown seedlings are weak, often with shallow roots.

Suitable for plants that take many years to bear fruit, are not fruit-bearing, are sterile, or have unstable seed production.

Spreading method: Cut the roots into 3-5cm length and spread them on the sand surface of shallow boxes and flower pots. Cover with soil (sand) about 1cm, keep it moist, and transplant after adventitious buds are produced.

Such as: Autumn peony, soap grass, cut autumn grass, perennial phlox, etc.

Cutting method: If the root is thick or fleshy, it can be cut into 3-8cm root segments, inserted vertically into the soil, with the upper end exposed above the soil surface, and then transplanted after adventitious buds appear.

Such as: peony, blood grass, peony, perennial grass, etc.

Environmental conditions for cuttings to take root

(1) Temperature

Soft material cuttings should be carried out between 20-25℃

Tropical plants can grow at temperatures above 25-30℃

Flowers with cold tolerance may be slightly lower

The substrate temperature (bottom temperature) needs to be slightly higher than the air temperature by 3-6°C, because when the bottom temperature is higher than the air temperature, it can promote the occurrence of roots, while low air temperature can inhibit the growth of branches and leaves.

(2) Humidity

The substrate should be moist, with a soil moisture content of 50-60% being appropriate. Too much moisture often causes cuttings to rot.

In the early stage of cutting, callus formation requires more water, and the water should be reduced later.

Air humidity, a relative humidity of 80-90% is appropriate, which can reduce excessive evaporation of water in the branches of the cuttings.

(3) Lighting

Soft wood cuttings generally have terminal buds and leaves and undergo photosynthesis in sunlight to produce auxin and promote rooting. However, strong light is not allowed, so moderate shade is provided in the early stage of cutting.

(4) Oxygen

When healing tissue and new roots occur, respiration is strong, so the cutting matrix is ​​required to have favorable conditions for oxygen supply.

The ideal cutting substrate should be constantly moist and well ventilated.

Therefore, river sand, peat and other light soils are suitable cutting substrates.

The cuttings should not be too deep. Cuttings usually take root near the edge of the pot.
