Cai Yuanpei immediately informed Xu Deheng of the news and agreed that students from Peking University and other colleges and universities in Beijing would gather in the auditorium of Peking University’s Third Hospital on the evening of May 3 to discuss the matter. After the May Fourth Movement broke out, Xu Deheng and 30 other patriotic students were arrested and imprisoned by the anti-military police.
