The formation of additional questions

Additional questions include a statement part and an additional question part. The additional question part is generally composed of an auxiliary verb, a be verb or a modal verb and a pronoun indicating the subject.

Affirmative statement part + negative additional question part

You’re going to the gym with me, aren’t you?

Negative statement + affirmative question part

He is not a middle school student, is he?

The answers to additional interrogative sentences are similar to those of general interrogative sentences. Please pay attention to the differences with Chinese expression habits. like:

Issues that should be paid attention to when changing the additional question part

1. When the statement part contains negative or semi-negative words such as sellom, hardly, never, rarely, few, little, nowhere, nothing, etc., the short question should be in the affirmative form.

2. When the statement part contains words that express negative meaning (containing negative prefixes such as im, in, dis, un, etc. or negative suffixes such as less), the statement part should be regarded as an affirmative sentence, and short questions should use the negative form.

He didn't succeed, did he?

◆Your mother dislikes seeing you with me, doesn’t she?

3． When the statement part is a "there be + subject + other" structure, the rhetorical question part should use a "be + there" structure.
