"In the Starry Sky (2)" Universe PPT Courseware 2

Review: What is a zodiac sign?

Constellations: In order to facilitate identification, people grouped the seemingly motionless stars into groups, divided the entire sky into 88 different areas, and named them. These areas are called constellations.

The origin of the constellations:

In 1928, the International Astronomical Union decided to divide the entire sky into 88 star areas, called constellations. The names of the constellations are shapes composed of bright stars, combined with mythological stories, and named with characters, animals and appliances. These 88 constellations are of different sizes and shapes. The largest constellation is Hydra, which spans 102° from east to west.

Know the constellations

1. Think about it: If you were lost at night, how would you identify the direction?

Polaris can help everyone identify the direction at night, but Polaris is a not-so-bright star. It can be found relatively easily using the Big Dipper or Cassiopeia in the constellation Ursa Major.

2. How can you find the Ursa Major constellation in the sky? What are the distinctive symbols of the Ursa Major constellation?

The obvious symbol of the Ursa Major constellation is the familiar Big Dipper, which consists of seven bright stars.

What I found:

Deneb, Vega and Altair are the famous bright stars in the summer sky, forming a triangle known as the "Summer Triangle". If you find them, you will also find the three constellations of Lyra, Swan and Aquila.

Scorpio is shaped like a scorpion, and its main symbol is Antares, also known as the Great Mars, which is a dazzling red star.

The distant stars cannot be distinguished by the naked eye.

The stars in the sky that appear to be about the same distance are actually very different from us.

3. Make activity stargazing charts

Production Method:

(1) Cut out the all-sky star chart to make a movable chassis.

(2) In addition, cut the two pieces of paper connected together into a paper plate slightly larger than the base plate. Cut an oval as shown in the textbook on one of them, and then use a thin line (or rivet) to connect the paper plate with the base plate. The movable chassis is assembled with the North Star as the center of the circle.

How to use star chart:

(1) Hold the activity stargazing chart above your head.

(2) Rotate the star chart so that the "Big Dipper" in the picture is in the same direction as the Big Dipper in the sky, and then use other constellations in the picture to identify the constellations in the sky in the corresponding direction.

1. Constellations are (visual images) of (different distances) and (no connection) stars in the sky. Graph (different) if viewed from different angles

2. The Big Dipper is the main symbol of the Ursa Major constellation.

3. The figure formed by (bright stars) is the main symbol of the constellation.

4. Three bright stars on summer nights form a huge triangle called the Summer Triangle. They are Deneb, Vega and Altair.

2. Connect: Connect the stars with their constellations.

Altair Lyra

Deneb Scorpio

Vega Aquila

Antares Cygnus
