Description
"The History of Human Understanding of the Earth and Its Movement" The Movement of the Earth PPT
Part One: Geocentric Theory
Ptolemy was an ancient Greek astronomer who was born around AD 100. Regarding the earth and its movement, he proposed the "geocentric theory" theory.
Main points made by Ptolemy
1. The earth is a sphere. If the earth were flat, everyone would see the sun or stars rising and setting at the same time, but this is not the case.
2. The earth is at the center of the universe and is stationary. If the earth rotates, it will inevitably cause other objects (such as clouds, etc.) to rotate together, but what people see is clouds and birds moving freely.
3. All the sun, moon and stars revolve around the earth and make a circular motion every day, because what people see is that these celestial bodies rise in the east and set in the west regularly every day.
PPT on the history of human understanding of the earth and its movement, part 2: heliocentric theory
Copernicus (1473-1543) was a Polish astronomer. Copernicus was very interested in astronomy when he was in middle school. He once followed his teacher to observe the stars on the top of the church tower. He believed that there were only two magic weapons for studying astronomy: mathematics and observation. He worked tirelessly, overcame difficulties, and persisted in observing celestial phenomena every day for 30 years. He finally obtained reliable data, proposed the "heliocentric theory", and published his immortal masterpiece "On the Movement of Celestial Bodies" before his death.
The main points made by Copernicus
1. The earth is spherical. If a light source is placed on the top of the ship's mast, when the ship sails away from the coast, people on the shore will see the light gradually decrease until it finally disappears, which shows that the surface of the earth is spherical.
2. The earth is in motion and rotates once every 24 hours. Because the sky is much larger than the earth, it is unimaginable if the infinite sky is rotating and the earth is not moving.
3. The sun is stationary and is at the center of the universe. The earth and other planets all make circular motions around the sun.
PPT on the history of human understanding of the earth and its movement, part 3: Comparing the two theories
What evidence did they use to support their respective opinions? Is this evidence sufficient?
The sun and stars appear at different times in different areas
Free movement of clouds and birds
The sun, moon and stars rise in the east and set in the west regularly every day
Can these two theories reasonably explain the phenomenon of day and night?
The relative circular motion of the sun and the earth can cause day and night phenomena.
