Part One: Observing Silkworm Chrysalises

The silkworm spun silk, and the silk tightly wrapped the silkworm. Why does a silkworm make a cocoon to wrap itself up? What becomes of the silkworm in the cocoon?

Is the silkworm inside the cocoon still alive? How do we know?

Carefully cut open a silkworm cocoon and observe the shape of the chrysalis.

Tilt the cocoon upright so that the chrysalis is close to the lower end. Then use scissors or a razor blade to cut a thin slit from the top.

Look at the shape, size and color of the cocoon.

Measure the length of the cocoon.

Compare the size and color of the cocoons of the class.

Pick out the largest and smallest cocoons. How long and wide are they?

Measurement methods:

Soak the silkworm cocoons in hot water.

Use a bamboo skewer to pick out the silk ends and wrap the silk around the cardboard to see how long the silk is.
