A new startPPT, Part 4: Grammar Essentials
There are many English sentences, but they have their own internal connections and common rules. The basic structure of English sentences can be summarized into five basic sentence patterns and their expansion, combination, omission or inversion. Mastering these five basic sentence patterns is the basis for mastering various English sentence structures.
The five basic sentence patterns in English are as follows:
Basic sentence pattern 1: S+V (subject + predicate)
Basic sentence pattern 2: S+V+P (main + system + table)
Basic sentence pattern three: S+V+O (subject + predicate + object)
Basic sentence pattern four: S+V+IO +O (subject + predicate + indirect object + direct object)
Basic sentence pattern five: S+V+O+C (subject + predicate + object + object complement)
1. Basic sentence pattern 1: S+V (subject + predicate)
The predicate verbs in this sentence pattern can express complete meanings. Such verbs are called intransitive verbs. Common verbs include: run, study, arrive, come, happen, etc. It cannot be followed by an object, but can be followed by an adverbial; the subject can also be followed by an attributive. like:
Time flies.(s+vi.) Time flies.
Students study hard. (s+vi.+adv.) Students study hard.
He went on holiday.(s+vi.+prep.phrase) He went on holiday.
We stopped to have a rest.(s+vi.+to do sth.) We stopped to have a rest.
2. Basic sentence pattern 2: S+V+P (main + system + table)
Sentences of this sentence type have a common feature: the verbs of the sentence cannot express a complete meaning. A predicate indicating the identity or status of the subject must be added to form a compound predicate in order to express the complete meaning. In addition to be-linking verbs, there are some verbs that can also be used as linking verbs:
Verbs expressing senses: feel, smell, taste, sound, look, etc.
Verbs expressing changes: become, get, grow, turn, go, fall, run, come, etc.
Verbs indicating continuation: remain, keep, stay, stand, continue, lie, etc.
Verbs of representation: seem, appear, look, etc.
Verbs expressing termination: prove, turn out, etc.
