Comparison of spelling rules in British and American English (part):

(1) In American English, the u in the letter combination our in British English is usually omitted;

Word Formation

There are four main methods of word formation in English: derivation, synthesis, transformation and abbreviation.

Point 1: Derivative method

Adding an affix before or after a root word to create a new word is called derivation. The affix added to the front is called a prefix, and the affix added to the back is called a suffix.

(1) Prefix

Prefixes generally only change the meaning of the word, not the part of speech.

(2) Suffix

Suffixes usually change the part of speech and form words with other parts of speech with similar meanings. A few suffixes will change the meaning of the word.
