Noun Phrases

Noun phrase: refers to a phrase centered on an adjective. It functions as a noun in a sentence and can be used as a subject, object, predicate or object complement. Common noun phrases are formed in the following forms:

Determiner + noun, such as The girl

Determiner + adjective (phrase) + noun, such as A beautiful girl

Determiner + noun + prepositional phrase such as A beautiful campus of my school

Determining word + descriptive noun + noun, such as My school life

◆The young lady over there is my English teacher．

That young lady over there is my English teacher.

(The form of the noun phrase The young lady is: determiner + adjective + noun, and the phrase is the subject in the sentence)

◆As a student, you must finish your homework on time．

As a student, you must complete your assignments on time.

(The form of the noun phrase your homework is: determiner + noun, and the phrase serves as the object in the sentence)

◆I have three close friends．

I have three good friends.

(The form of the noun phrase three close friends is: determiner + adjective + noun, and the phrase serves as the object in the sentence)

◆He is my best friend．

He is my best friend.

(The form of the noun phrase my best friend is: determiner + adjective + noun, this phrase is used as a predicate in the sentence)

◆There are some red roses on that small table．

There are some red roses on that little dining table.

(The form of the noun phrase some red roses is: determiner + adjective + noun, this phrase serves as the subject in the sentence; that small table is also a noun phrase, and serves as the object of the preposition on in the sentence)

Adjective Phrases

Adjective phrase: refers to a phrase centered on an adjective. It functions as an adjective in a sentence. It can modify a noun or pronoun, and can also be used as a predicate or object complement. Common forms of adjective phrases are:

Adverb + adjective: such as very suitable

Adjective + enough, such as good enough

Adjective + prepositional phrase such as good for noting

Adverb + adjective + prepositional phrase such as well worthy of praise

I'm glad to see you. (Adverb + adjective, this phrase serves as a predicate in the sentence)

◆Your room is large and beautiful．

Your room is big and beautiful. (Adjective + and/but + adjective, this phrase is used as a predicate in the sentence)

◆The most beautiful tourist attraction in China is Mount Huang． The most beautiful tourist attraction in China is Huangshan.

(determiner + adverb + adjective, this phrase is used as an attributive in the sentence to modify the noun tourist attraction)

Adverb Phrases

Adverb phrase: refers to a phrase centered on an adverb. It functions as an adverb in a sentence and can modify verbs, adjectives or adverbs. Common adverb phrases are formed in the form:

(adverb +) adverb such as much more beautifully

◆Bill did the work very well．

Bill did a great job.

(The adverb very modifies the adverb well, and the adverb phrase very well modifies the verb did)

◆We are all entirely responsible for our actions．

We all take full responsibility for our actions.

(The adverb phrase all entirely modifies the adjective phrase responsible for)
