Distinguish between cause and reason

cause

Cause; refers to the cause that causes a certain consequence. Often used with of, that is, "the cause of . . . ".

The cause of the accident was that he drove too fast.

The cause of the accident was that he was driving too fast.

reason

Reason, reason; refers to the reason for deciding to do something or taking a certain action, from which a conclusion or explanation can be drawn. Often used with for, that is, "the reason for...".

The reason for my absence was that I was ill.

I didn't come because I was sick.
