Syntactic function of verb infinitive

subject

To learn English is not easy for us.＝It is not easy for us to learn English. It is not easy for us to learn English.

When the infinitive of the verb is used as the subject, it is often transformed into using it as the formal subject, and the infinitive is placed after it.

predicative

My work is to clean the room every day.＝To clean the room every day is my work. Cleaning the room every day is my work.

object

It can only be used as the object of certain verbs, but generally cannot be used as the object of prepositions.

Note (1) Infinitives usually have three tense forms: simple, progressive and perfect. But it cannot be used as a predicate.

(2) The negative form of the infinitive is to add not directly in front of to.

(3) Infinitives can be used with interrogative words who, which, what, when, how, where (except why), etc. to form infinitive phrases, which can be used as subjects, objects or predicates in sentences.
