This is north. North points up❷ on a map.

This is east. East points right.

This is west. West points left.

This is south. South points down.

2.A map of the world

Li Ming: Look at the map, Wang Mei. We can see all the countries ❸ around the world.

Wang Mei: Yes. I can see China. It’s red on the map. But where is New Zealand? My grandparents will go there during the Spring Festival.

Knowledge point 1

north, south, east and west are all locative words.

Parts of speech and usage of four locative words.

These four directional words + ern form an adjective, which means "...square", that is:

eg: Please point up. Please point up.

Distinguish between point at and point to

point at

Point to something closer. Pointing at someone often means blaming or complaining.

You can’t point at your mother like that.

point to

Point to something further away. It does not have a derogatory meaning when directed at someone.

He is pointing to a flying bird happily. He is pointing to a flying bird happily.

【Point】point up means "point upward", point to means "point to something/person". According to the meaning of the sentence "Nick points to the building at the end of the street..." we can see that point to is used here.
