Grammar

There are three forms of verb endings in the third person singular.

(1) For general verbs, -s is added to the end of the word, and -s is pronounced after the unvoiced consonant.

/s/, pronounced /z/ after a voiced consonant or vowel, pronounced ds

/dz/, ts reads /ts/. like:

help → helps, know → knows,

get → gets, read → reads

(2) Add -es to verbs with the letters s, x, ch, sh or some verbs ending in o, and -es reads /iz/. like:

guess → guesses, fix → fixes,

teach → teaches, wash → washes

go → goes, do → does

(3) For verbs ending with a consonant letter + y, first change y to i, then add -es, and -ies is pronounced /iz/. like:

carry → carries, fly → flies

Note: In play →plays and say →says, the letter y is preceded by a vowel, and the third person singular form adds -s directly after the verb.

(4) Exceptions for special words. Such as: be → is, have → has
