Simple present tense of action verbs

In English, the time when an action occurs is generally expressed through changes in the predicate verb and time adverbials in the sentence. This is the tense of English. Today we will take a preliminary look at the present simple tense of action verbs with you.

Action verbs refer to verbs that describe actual actions, including transitive verbs and intransitive verbs, such as go, have, dance, etc. verbs that express actions. Specific uses of action verbs in the present tense:

(1) Describe regular, habitual or recurring actions. like:

I go to school at 8 o’clock every day.

The students have lunch at 12 o’clock.

I do my homework at nine.

(2) To describe the state of existence, the simple present tense of the action verb should also be used. like:

You dance well.

I like maths very much.

You sing very well.

In sentences with action verbs as predicates, when the subject of the sentence is the first or second person or a noun or pronoun expressing a plural concept, the declarative sentence structure of the simple present tense is generally: "subject + base form of the action verb + other". The form of the negative sentence relies on don’t (don’t is the abbreviation of do not. In the simple present tense structure, do in do not is an auxiliary verb, which has no meaning, but cannot be omitted). like:

They don’t have an English class today.

We go to school from Monday to Friday.

We don’t go to school on the weekend.

When an action verb is used as a predicate in a sentence in the simple present tense, when the subject of the sentence is a third-person singular noun or pronoun (such as she, he, it, Jenny, my teacher, etc.), the predicate verb will change. The change pattern is as follows:

①Usually add "-s" directly after the verb. like:

walk →walks ride →rides

②When the verb ends with s, x, ch, or sh, add "-es" directly to the end of the word. like:

watch →watches wash →washes

③When the verb ends with a consonant plus o, usually add "-es" directly after the verb. like:

go →goes do →does

④When the verb ends with a consonant plus y, change y to i first and then add "-es". like:

cry → cries

⑤ Some action verbs change irregularly when they are changed into the third person singular form. Such words need to be carefully accumulated and memorized in daily life. like:

have → has

Usage of at, in, on

1. In terms of expressing location, at + point, on + surface, in + within. like:

at the table "at the table" emphasizes the specific location;

on the chair "on the chair", in contact with the surface of the chair, emphasizing the contact surface;

in the room "in the room", emphasizing the internal space.

2. In terms of expressing time:

in means a time period, that is, within a longer period of time, such as: in the afternoon, in a week, in autumn, in 1996

at usually refers to a point in time, such as: at six o’clock

on means a specific day or time of day, such as: on Sunday, on Monday afternoon, on a cold winter morning, on my birthday

3. In some time phrases, at can indicate a time period, such as:

at night, at Christmas
