Revision: when vs. while

Both words mean "when..."

When can refer to a certain point in time or a period of time;

while emphasizes a period of time, so the predicate verb of the clause is often continuous.

When when means "during a certain period of time", it can replace

while, but while cannot replace when.

e.g. When I came home, she was cooking dinner.

When I got home, she was cooking.

When you hang wet clothes near a fire, you will see

steam rising from them.

When you hang wet clothes near a fire, you will see moisture rising from the clothes.
