Representation of parallel lines:

We usually use "//" to indicate parallelism.

AB∥CD

Read as: "Line AB is parallel to line CD"

a ∥ b

Read as: "Line a is parallel to line b"

As shown in the figure on the right, straight line a//b, A, and B are any two points on straight line a.

(1) Please use a triangle plate to draw perpendicular segments AM and BN from point A and point B to straight line b respectively. Observe and measure AM and BN to see what is the relationship between their lengths?

(2) Take another point C on straight line a and draw a perpendicular segment from point C to straight line b. Is its length equal to the length of AM and BN?

What conclusion can you draw through our hands-on operation?

If straight line a//b, then the distance from any point on straight line a to straight line b is equal. This distance is called the distance between parallel lines a and b.
