"Under the Cibeigu Mountain" is selected from Volume 115 of "Complete Poems of the Tang Dynasty" (Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House, 1986 edition). In ancient times, transportation was underdeveloped, and people living in other places or working abroad would naturally feel homesick if they could not return home for a long time. The poet Wang Wan was from the north and traveled between Wu and Chu. This poem was written by him as he was feeling homesick while mooring his boat at the foot of Beigu Mountain along the way.

Rhymed Poetry Rhymed Poetry originated from Shen Yue's new style poems in the Yongming Dynasty of the Southern Dynasty that emphasized rhythm and parallelism. It was formally finalized in the Shen Yue period of the early Tang Dynasty and the Wen period of the Song Dynasty, and matured in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Rhymed poetry requires the number of words in the verses to be uniform, with each poem consisting of five, six, or seven-character sentences, referred to as five-character, six-character, or seven-character verses, among which six-character verses are less common.

Cibei Gushanxia PPT, the third part of the content: text interpretation

At the foot of Cibeigu Mountain

Traveling outside the green mountains, boating in front of the green water.

The journey is beyond the green mountains, and the boat is in the green water.

The tide is flat, the banks are wide, the wind is blowing and the sail is hanging.

The tide is high, and the two banks are level with the river, which looks very open. When sailing with the wind, a white sail hangs high.

Hai Ri is born and the night is over, and Jiang Chun is entering the old year.

The night has not yet faded, a red sun has risen from the sea, the old year has not passed away, and the spring is already showing on the river.

Where can I find the hometown book? It's near Yanluoyang.

Where should I send the letters of missing my hometown? I hope that the geese returning to the north will carry a letter from home to Luoyang.

Cibei Gushanxia PPT, Part 4: Poetry Appreciation

First couplet (1-2): Traveling outside the green mountains, boating in front of the green water

The poet is on the boat at the moment, but the "guest road" is outside the green mountains and he cannot see it. Why is the "guest road" mentioned at the beginning of the poem?

This is the poet's imagination on the boat. It shows that after the boat arrives in Zhenjiang, it has to take a post train to go to other places, which already implies the hard work of the journey.

Couplet (3-4): "The tide is flat and both sides are wide, the wind is blowing and the sail is hanging"

When and where did the poet see this scene? Can you imagine the boat sailing? Why are "tide flat" and "wind upright" mentioned in particular?

At the dawn of the day, the boat was approaching its destination (i.e. Beigu Mountain) on the Yangtze River. The word "tide flat" foreshadows the sentence "Jiang Chun" in the next sentence.

Imagine the boat sailing

The spring tide is full, and the river is vast. Looking around, the river surface seems to be level with the embankment, and the poet's sight on the boat is also broadened. On a ship that was moving smoothly and quickly in the wind, a sail hung straight and high.

Because of the "flat tide", the "both sides of the bank are wide", and because of the "positive wind", the sails are hanging high and straight in the air, and the scenery is extremely vivid. This is the scenery seen on the boat, which shows the poet's broad mind.
