"Black People Talk about Rivers" PPT courseware
Negroes talk about rivers
About the Author
Hughes (1902-1967), an African-American poet, novelist, leader of the American African-American Renaissance Movement, known as the "Poet Laureate of Harlem (the black ghetto in New York)".
Hughes wrote novels, screenplays, autobiographies and news sketches, with his most outstanding achievements in poetry. He has created more than ten collections of poetry, the more important ones include "Shakespeare in Harlem", "One-Way Ticket", "Montage of Delayed Dreams", etc.
Hughes published nine collections of poetry during his lifetime. His "I Too" was originally published in The New Negro in 1925; it is a tribute to Walter. The echo of Whitman's poem "I Sing of America" affirms that "the darker brother" also sings an American song and will take his rightful place in America.

Black people are a race with a long history. Among the several existing human races, black people were the first to leave their footprints on the earth.
However, in modern history, the land where black people lived was invaded by colonial rulers. Many black people were turned into slaves and sold to the Americas to do hard manual labor. They were physically and mentally bullied. After the Civil War, slavery was abolished in the United States and blacks gained freedom.
Part One (Section 1): Emphasizes the black witness to the “river” (history).
Part Two (Sections 2, 3, and 4): Review history with exaggeration.
Part Three (Section 5): Strengthen the prominent theme, the black race is profound because it has witnessed history.
Text explanation
Taste the first section
I know rivers:
I know rivers as old as the world,
A river older than the blood that flows in human veins
Taste: In this poem, "river" is a highly condensed image. We can understand it as a symbol of history. Black people's tracing back to rivers is a tracing back to their own history and a search for their ancestors and homeland (expressing thoughts and feelings by talking about "rivers"). The "I" in the poem is not a specific black person, but represents the entire black race. In this stanza, the poet repeatedly emphasizes the black people’s testimony of the “river” (history) and vividly points out that this “river” is “as old as the world” and is older than the river in the human body—“blood.” More ancient.
Taste Section 2
“My soul became as deep as a river.”
Taste: There is only one line in the second stanza, and its function is to connect the previous and the following. This poem is a proud declaration issued by the author on behalf of all black people: the black race is a race with a long tradition.
Troubleshooting
1. What thoughts and feelings does the poet express by talking about "river"?
"River" is a highly condensed image. We can understand it as a symbol of history. Black people's tracing back to the river is a tracing back to their own history, and a search for their ancestors and homeland.
2. How should we understand "My soul has become as deep as a river"? What is the expressive effect of this poem appearing twice?
"My soul is as deep as a river" can be understood to mean that due to the black people's witness to the "river" (history), the achievements of human civilization and culture have been precipitated in the "soul" of the black people.
Class summary
Hughes used the highly condensed image of "river" to review the history of mankind, highlighting the status of the black race in the history of human development and showing the pride of black people in their own race.
From this poem, we can also feel the poet's faint sadness. This sadness stems from the long history and deep suffering of black people.
