Lao She (1899-1966) is a modern writer and outstanding language master. He is one of the pioneers of new literature since the May 4th Movement in my country and a famous writer with world reputation. In the early days of the "Cultural Revolution", he was persecuted and committed suicide by throwing himself into a lake. He wrote approximately 8 million words of works in his lifetime. Mainly include: novels "Lao Zhang's Philosophy", "Two Horses", "Divorce", "The Biography of Niu Tianci", "Camel Xiangzi", "Four Generations Under One Roof"; novellas "Crescent Moon", "My Life" "A Lifetime"; short stories "Liu Family Courtyard" and "Soul-Breaking Gun"; plays "Longxugou", "Teahouse" and "Fang Zhenzhu". His works have won a large number of readers due to their unique humorous style and strong national color, as well as their appeal to both refined and popular tastes from content to form.

The play has three acts in total, each depicting an era.

Act One: After the failure of the Reform Movement of 1898 in the late Qing Dynasty. Yutai Teahouse has a prosperous business, with three religions and nine streams, and all kinds of people gather here.

Act 2: During the period of war between the warlords of the Republic of China, the teahouse business was difficult. Although Wang Lifa worked hard to improve, he could only operate miserably.

The third act: social life during the Kuomintang rule after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. All the honest people in the play are trapped in an inescapable dilemma.

"Teahouse" represents the highest achievement of Lao She's drama creation. The work is based on the ups and downs of Yutai Teahouse, a large teahouse in old Beijing. Through the description of the teahouse and the changes in the fate of each character, the work reflects the story from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China. The social landscape in the past 50 years in three different eras after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War reveals the turmoil, darkness and sin of the semi-feudal and semi-colonial old China.
