Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a great Russian writer. Born into a noble family, he received a typical aristocratic education in his early years. Starting in 1863, he spent six years writing the masterpiece "War and Peace", and later wrote famous works such as "Anna Karenina" and "Resurrection". His works are majestic, with numerous characters, and realistic and delicate psychological descriptions. They have a huge influence in the history of world literature.

"Anna Karenina" is the representative work of the famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. Through the two clues of the heroine Anna's tragedy of pursuing love, and Levin's reforms and explorations in the face of crisis in the countryside, this book depicts a broad and colorful picture of Russia from Moscow to the countryside in other provinces. It has described more than 150 stories. Characters is a social encyclopedia-like work.

1. “Poverty” can be seen from “house decoration”

The ancient clock struck ten, eleven times dumbly...

2. Identify “poverty” from “food and clothing”

The children had no shoes to wear and ran around barefoot in both winter and summer. They ate only black bread and only fish as food.

3. We can see “poverty” from “the busyness of Sanna and the fisherman”

My husband went out to sea in a small boat early in the morning and had not returned yet.

Her husband did not care about his health and went out to fish in cold weather and storms. She also worked from morning to night and could barely fill her stomach.

Oops, really bad! Nothing was hit, and the net was torn. Bad luck, bad luck! The weather is so awesome! I can't even remember a time when I had such a night, and there was no such thing as fishing! Thank God, I finally came back alive.

4. "Poor" can be seen from "bad weather"

The cold wind howled outside, and the surging waves hit the shore, splashing waves. There is a storm at sea, and it is dark and cold outside...

The roar of the sea breeze, the roar of the waves, the roar of the wind

Nothing could be seen on the sea.

Psychological description:

① Her heart was beating very fast. She didn’t know why she did this, but she felt she had to do it.

"Doing this" means adopting Simon's two orphans and raising them into adults. Faced with Simon's tragic experience, Sanna instinctively took the two orphans back to her home.

"I don't know why I want to do this" and "But I feel I have to do this" seem to be contradictory, but they actually reflect Sanna's kind qualities of sympathizing with and caring for the poor.

② She thought uneasily: "What will he say? Is this a joke? His five children are enough for him... Is he coming?... No, not yet!... Why? Bring them here?... He will beat me! That's what I deserve, I'm doing it myself... Well, you might as well beat me!"

After Sanna took the orphan back, she felt very nervous and worried. She was worried that it would increase the burden on her husband and she didn't know how to tell her husband about it. But she finally decided that she would rather have her husband beat her up than adopt an orphan. Through Sanna's psychological activities, readers can feel Sanna's beautiful heart that she loves her husband deeply, sympathizes with orphans, and would rather endure hardship herself than help others.

The continuous use of ellipses shows the intermittent psychological activities of Sanna at that time, and realistically writes Sanna's complex, contradictory and uneasy psychology.

③The fisherman frowned, his face became serious and worried. "Well, that's a problem!" He scratched the back of his head and said, "Well, what do you think we should do? We have to bring them here, how can we stay with the dead! Oh, we, we can always get through it! Go quickly! Don't Wait until they wake up."

This passage describes in detail the fisherman's thinking process before and after making his decision, showing that he, like his wife Sanna, has a noble heart that is willing to suffer himself but also to help others.

The function of ellipsis:

She thought uneasily: "What will he say? Is this a joke? Five children are enough for him. (1)... Is he coming? (2)... No, he's not here yet! "

(1) Omitted: Sanna heard some noise at the door

(2) Omitting the psychology of taking a look

(3) and (4) omit the ambivalence

(5) Sanna is determined to take on everything

The function of all ellipses: psychological train of thought intermittently

Which sentences reflect Sanna's diligence?

The cold wind howled outside, and the surging waves hit the shore, splashing waves. There was a storm at sea and it was dark and cold outside.

The cabin is warm and comfortable

The floor was swept clean, the fire was still burning in the stove, and the dishes gleamed on the shelves.

The description of the environment, through the sharp contrast between the warmth inside the house and the howling cold wind outside, fully demonstrates that Sanna is hardworking and capable.

After-school pen practice: continuation of "The Poor"

The text came to an abrupt end after Sanna told her husband that she had taken the child home. What will be the fate of the child? How will Sanna and the fisherman lead the children to overcome one difficulty after another?
