Introduction to Asimov

Asimov was born in the small town of Petrovich near Smolensk, Soviet Union. He liked reading science fiction novels since he was a child. He wrote a science fiction novel when he was 15 years old and was admitted to Columbia University in the same year. When he was 18 years old, that is, in 1938, he published his first science fiction novel, "The Airship Stealer". After World War II, Asimov engaged in research at Columbia University and received his PhD in 1949. In 1955, Asimov was promoted to associate professor at Boston University. In 1958, Asimov resigned from his teaching position at Boston University and became a professional writer. He has published more than 300 science fiction novels and popular science works so far, and is recognized as the leading science fiction writer in the United States today.

overall perception

1. How do you know that "dinosaurs are indeed found all over the world"?

2. Where does the theory that "continental drift" spread dinosaurs all over the world come from?

3. What do you think of scientists’ inferences?

Paragraph structure of "Dinosaurs Are Everywhere"

The full text has a total of 15 natural paragraphs and is divided into three parts.

Part One (1): Use a scientific point of view - "Discoveries in one scientific field will definitely have an impact on other fields" to introduce the content of the explanation.

Part 2 (2-14): Explain the content of the explanation - the discovery of dinosaur fossils in Antarctica shows that "dinosaurs are everywhere", and then the discovery of "dinosaurs are everywhere" is used to deduce the reasons.

Part Three (15): Summarize the explanatory content and end the full text with "The discovery of Antarctic dinosaur fossils provides strong evidence to support the theory that the earth's crust is moving slowly but irresistibly."

Explain the order

The author adopts a logical sequence and focuses on explaining things. Therefore, in a short space of time, he analyzes abstract scientific knowledge layer by layer, explaining it clearly in a rigorous, simple and easy-to-understand manner.

Paragraph structure of "The Flattened Sand"

The full text can be divided into two parts.

The first part (1-4) proposes two opposing theories regarding the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago, namely the "impact theory" and the "volcano theory". The second and third natural paragraphs gave two examples and put forward the two views of "impact theory" and "volcano theory".

The second part (5-17), through reflection on the "flattened sand", proves that the alien impact caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, supporting the "impact theory".

How does the author prove that the "impact theory" is true?

1. If you heat quartz at 850C for 30 minutes, it will turn into ordinary sand. (You can also heat diamond in a vacuum to return it to its original carbon state.) - 10

2. Stone quartz has been found in some places, and there is evidence that these areas were once impacted by huge meteorites. The huge pressure generated by the impact formed the quartz. In addition, quartz is also found at sites where atomic bomb explosion experiments were conducted. It is formed by the huge pressure of the expanding fireball. ——12

3. Reasoning: Stone quartz was found in rock formations 65 million years ago - it cannot come from the depths of the earth's crust - it can only come from alien impacts (there were no atomic bombs at the time) - 65 million years ago was the time when the dinosaurs became extinct - Conclusion: Dinosaurs Extinction due to alien impact.

Main point

In these two short articles, one supports the continental drift hypothesis based on the fact that dinosaur fossils were found in Antarctica; the other proves that an alien impact caused the extinction of dinosaurs through reflections on "flattened sand."

Operation:

Use your imagination. Can you name a few reasons why the dinosaurs became extinct?
