Use metaphors, thimbles and other rhetorical methods.

The function is to make the language vivid and vivid, interlocking in form, and advancing step by step in content.

This section always says that ideal is the direction of progress; it plays a leading role in the whole poem.

2. The second verse of the poem says that different eras have different ideals, and ideals are relevant to the times, right? Beyond that, what does it mean?

Yes. Ideals are of the times, and ideals are of different levels. As society continues to progress, so do ideals. When one need is satisfied, new needs and new ideals will arise.

3. Read verse 3 aloud and talk about the metaphorical functions of "string of pearls" and "backbone".

Different ideals from different historical periods, connected together, are like a "string of pearls", driving the progress of history. Ideals are also like the "backbone", the spiritual pillar and driving force that drives history forward.

Troubleshooting

1. Read Section 9. How does this section relate to the previous section? What are the characteristics of the sentence patterns in the third and fourth sentences? What is the function? What is the typical significance of the author’s examples of “sinners” and “prodigal sons”?

The parallel relationships are all about the meaning of ideals to life. The previous section was written from the front, and this section is written from the reverse. The third and fourth sentences are two inverted sentences, respectively emphasizing "giving sinners new life" and "calling the prodigal son back." The typical meaning is that even "sinners" and "prodigal sons" have changed themselves because of their ideals, let alone ordinary people.

2. Stanzas 10 and 11, what is the structural relationship between these two poems? What's the difference in content? Can the word "slough" be replaced with the word "change"? Why?

Progressive relationship. Section 10 writes from the passive side about what should be done if ideals have been misinterpreted, tarnished and ruined. Section 11 writes about the consequences of some people voluntarily giving up their ideals. It cannot be changed, "sloughing" means transforming from good to bad, while "changing" can be good or bad.

3. Section 12, what is the main content of this section?

Encourage people to have lofty ideals and strive for them.
