"Mulan Poetry" PPT courseware 10
Introduction to Mulan
Hua Mulan was a native of Yucheng County, Henan Province in ancient times. The woman disguised herself as a man, joined the army in place of her father, and achieved many military exploits. When Kai returned, he was rewarded by the emperor, but Mulan didn't accept it. She wanted to be accepted into the palace, but she refused with death. In the early Tang Dynasty, he was posthumously named General Xiaolie. To commemorate her, people built the Hua Mulan Temple in the Tang Dynasty.
structural hierarchy
The first part (paragraphs 1, 2, and 3) writes about Mulan joining the army and embarking on a journey on behalf of her father.
The second part (paragraph 4) describes Mulan's triumphant return after a long and fierce battle.
The third part (paragraphs 5 and 6) writes about Mulan, who returns to court and resigns from office, retires after becoming successful, returns to her hometown, and reunites with her family.
In the fourth part (paragraph 7), the singers use metaphors to praise Mulan.
Character analysis
Combined with specific poems, tell us what are the admirable and lovely things about Mulan?
I am willing to be a saddle horse for the city, and from now on I will fight for my father.
Thousands of miles to go to war, pass the mountain as if flying.
A general will die in a hundred battles, and a strong man will return after ten years.
The Khan asked what he wanted, Mulan did not need a minister;
I am willing to travel thousands of miles to send my son back to his hometown.
Reading and research:
①What rhetorical techniques were used in the second paragraph to describe Khan’s order of troops, and what is their function?
②The third paragraph uses parallel sentences to cover the east, west, south, and north cities. Why not buy everything in one place? Is it cumbersome to write like this?
③ In the fifth natural paragraph, Mulan resigns from office and returns home. What rhetorical techniques are used to express Mulan’s sentiments?
④ In paragraph 6, Mulan returns home to reunite with her relatives. What rhetorical device is used? How does it express her mood?
⑤What role does the appendix at the end play in the text?
⑥What is the central idea of this poem?
Translation 1 Translation (pay attention to the overall meaning)
Buy horses in the east market, buy saddles in the west market,
Buy bridles in the southern market and long whips in the northern market.
The meaning of these four sentences is to go to various markets to prepare pommel horses and other war equipment, not to buy the same thing in one place.
A general will die in a hundred battles, and a strong man will return after ten years.
These two sentences mean that after many years of fighting, many soldiers died on the battlefield, and Mulan and other survivors returned victorious.
Open the door of my east pavilion and sit on my bed in the west pavilion.
The meaning of these two sentences is that you should open the door of every house and go in to take a look. It is not that you open the door of the east pavilion and don't go in, and then go to the bed in the west pavilion and sit down.
Duality: A pair of phrases or sentences with the same number of words, the same structure, and symmetrical meaning.
Strict parallelism: The upper and lower sentences are required to have the same number of words, opposite parts of speech, the same structure, opposite oblique and oblique words, and no repeated use of words.
Broad Duality: Only part of the five requirements of strict duality can be met.
