The poem was written in the autumn of the twelfth year of Jian'an (207) in the Eastern Han Dynasty. In 207 AD, Cao Cao personally led his army northward. Chasing and annihilating the remnants of Yuan Shao's troops, he vowed to fight for the Northern Expedition in May, and left Lulong Village in July to unify the north. The poet climbed up Jieshi Mountain, looked at the sea, and left this famous poem that has been praised through the ages.
