The text is excerpted from Act 4, Scene 1 of The Merchant of Venice, which is the climax of the play. The conflict revolves around whether to "punish according to the contract". The writing is ups and downs and exciting.

The scene begins with Portia's appearance and is divided into two halves. The first half is mainly about Shylock, who insists on revenge and must be punished as promised; the second half is about Thea, who outsmarts Shylock and finally wins.
