Chen Yi (1901-1972), courtesy name Zhonghong, was born in Lezhi, Sichuan. He was one of the founders and leaders of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, a proletarian revolutionary and strategist. This poem is selected from "Selected Poems of Chen Yi" (People's Literature Society 1977 edition). In October 1934, the Central Red Army in Jiangxi began its Long March. At that time, Comrade Chen Yi was seriously injured and stayed in Jiangxi to serve as military commander and preside over government work. In the spring of 1935, under heavy siege by the enemy, he led his troops to break through to the Youshan and Meishan (two mountains in the Meiling Mountains) areas at the junction of Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces to carry out guerrilla warfare, which lasted for nearly three years. These three years of guerrilla warfare were the most arduous and difficult stage they had ever experienced in their revolutionary struggle. In the winter of 1936, the guerrillas led by Chen Yi were surrounded by the enemy in Meishan. Comrade Chen Yi lay in the thick grass with his injuries for more than 20 days.
