Wen Tianxiang, courtesy name Song Rui and nickname Wenshan, was a patriotic poet of the Southern Song Dynasty. At the age of 20, he won the first prize in the examination and became the Prime Minister and Privy Envoy. In the first month of 1279 (the second year after Wen Tianxiang was captured by the Yuan army), when crossing the Lingding Ocean, the Yuan army commander Zhang Hongfan forced Wen Tianxiang to write a letter to surrender the Song Dynasty general Zhang Shijie who was resisting at sea. Wen Tianxiang firmly refused and wrote this poem as answer. The author of this poem vows to fight to the death, and it is an upright song full of the author's patriotic passion.
