This article is selected from "The Scream" (Volume 1 of "The Complete Works of Lu Xun", People's Literature Publishing House, 2005 edition). "Hometown" is based on Lu Xun's personal experience of returning to his hometown in December 1919. In August 1919, Lu Xun bought a residence at No. 11 Badaowan, Xizhimen Nei, in Beijing, ending his long-term guild life. In December of the same year, Lu Xun returned to his hometown of Shaoxing to pick up his mother and family members in Beijing. While in his hometown, Lu Xun picked up his childhood friend, farmer Zhang Runshui.

He told Lu Xun about the miserable situation of being a man and working in the countryside, and always having to donate several times to sell something, which aroused Lu Xun's deep sympathy.

When Lu Xun returned to his hometown this time, he witnessed the dilapidation of the countryside and the misery of the farmers, and felt very sad and angry. In January 1921, he wrote this novel based on his experience of returning home and based on Zhang Runshui.
