Gu Jiegang (1893-1980) was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu.

His original name was Song Kun and his courtesy name was Mingjian. He was the founder of the modern school of ancient history analysis and the founder of Chinese historical geography and folklore. He is a scholar with important influence in the history of modern Chinese academic development. “Before liberation, Japanese scholars, especially professors from prestigious universities such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Imperial University, looked down upon Chinese scholars, but they highly respected Mr. Gu Jiegang and Mr. Chen Yuan.

In 1920, Gu Jiegang stayed at the school as a teaching assistant after graduating. In the winter of the same year, at the request of Hu Shi, he punctuated Yao Jiheng's "An Examination of Ancient and Modern Forged Books" and Cui Shu's "Cui Dongbi's Posthumous Letters", and began to compile the "Forgery Discrimination Series". In 1922, he went to Shanghai to serve as editor of the Commercial Press. During this period, he, Hu Shi and Qian Xuantong discussed the issue of forgery of the classics through letters, began to revive the historical skepticism movement, and turned Confucian forgery into a historian's forgery.

In 1923, he put forward the theory of "ancient Chinese history formed layer by layer", which triggered a great debate on ancient history. In 1926, Gu Jiegang collected articles from both sides of the debate and compiled them into the first volume of "Ancient History Debate". As a result, an ancient history debate school with the banner of "doubting ancient history" emerged in the Chinese history circle. From 1926 to 1929, he taught at Xiamen University, Sun Yat-sen University, Peking University and Yenching University. In 1934, he founded the semi-monthly magazine "Yu Gong" and advocated the study of historical geography and frontier geography based on the study of "Shang Shu·Yu Gong". During the Anti-Japanese War, he taught in Kunming, Chengdu and Chongqing. At the same time, he devoted himself to writing and editing publications.
