Questions and Thoughts

In a physics experiment, a 10Ω fixed-value resistor is needed, but now there are only some 5Ω fixed-value resistors. Can you find a way to complete this experiment?

Equivalent resistance

As shown in Figure A, connect the resistors R1 and R2 to both ends of the circuit with a voltage of U. The current in the circuit is I. Replace these two resistors with a resistor R and still connect them to the circuit with a voltage of U. For example Shown in Figure B. If the current in the circuit is still I, then the effect produced by this resistor R is the same as that produced by the original two resistors R1 and R2, then we call the resistor R the equivalent resistance of R1 and R2.

Knowledge expansion

When conductors are connected in series, the length of the conductor is increased, so the equivalent resistance is greater than the resistance of each conductor in series.

Example 1. As shown in the figure, it is known that R1=8Ω, R2=12Ω, and the power supply voltage U=6V. Find

(1) Current in the circuit;

(2) What is the voltage across R1 and R2?

(3) What is the ratio of the voltages divided by the two resistors?

Formula Derivation

As shown in Figure A, in a parallel circuit,

The total current is equal to the sum of the currents of each branch, I =I1+I2

The voltages at both ends of each branch are equal, U =U1 =U2

According to Ohm's law I1= U1 /R1 I2=U2/R2

As shown in Figure B I=U/R

Combining the above formulas, we can get U/R= U1 /R1+ U2/R2

1/R =1 /R1+ 1/R2

practice

1. n resistors with resistance R0 are connected in series, then the total resistance is ( ).

2. n resistors with resistance R0 are connected in parallel, then the total resistance is ( ).

3. There are two 10 Ω resistors. Please connect them to the circuit in different ways. How many different resistance values can you get?
