1. Model of the Earth—Globe

1. Use the right hand to indicate the direction of the Earth's rotation:

What is a meridian?

On the earth's surface, the lines connecting the north and south poles are called longitudes, also called meridians.

What is the prime meridian?

Internationally, the meridian passing through the former site of the Greenwich Observatory in the United Kingdom is called the prime meridian.

Division of East and West Meridians:

East longitude (E): 180° eastward from 0° longitude

West longitude (W): 180° westward from 0° longitude

The east and west longitudes coincide at 180°

Division of north and south latitudes:

0° latitude: Equator

North latitude (N): latitude north of the equator (0-90°)

North Pole: 90° north latitude

South latitude (S): Latitude south of the equator (0-90°)

Antarctica: 90° south latitude
