Part One: The History of the Compass

A compass is an instrument that uses magnets to indicate direction. The compass is one of the four great inventions in ancient my country. How is the compass designed?

A long time ago, when people were looking for iron ore, they discovered an ore that could attract iron. They called this ore magnet.

More than 2,000 years ago, people made a natural magnet into the shape of a spoon and placed it on a smooth copper plate with directions engraved on it. They gently turned the spoon. When it stopped turning, the handle of the spoon always pointed south. People called it "Si Nan". This is the world's earliest "compass".

More than 900 years ago, people knew how to turn iron sheets and steel needles into magnets, and produced dexterous compasses and water-floating compasses.

Later, people combined the magnetic needle and the azimuth disk to create a direction-finding instrument called a compass. With a compass, it is not easy to lose your way while sailing.

How to use a compass to determine direction

1. Lay the compass box flat and let the magnetic needle rotate freely.

2. After the magnetic needle stops swinging, turn the compass box so that the south (S) and north (N) directions marked on the azimuth plate are consistent with the south and north directions pointed by the magnetic needle.

3. Determine each direction according to the azimuth dial.
