Part One: Observing Beautiful Crystals

Use the naked eye to observe salt, sugar, alkaline noodles, and MSG granules. What do they look like?

Particles of salt, sugar, alkaline noodles, and MSG are all solids with regular geometric shapes. People call such solid substances "crystals."

Most solid substances in nature are crystals or consist of crystals. Crystals come in many shapes, but they are all regular. Some are cubes, some are like pyramids, some are like clusters of needles, some crystals are larger and visible to the naked eye, and some are smaller and can only be seen under a magnifying glass or microscope.

How are crystals produced in nature?

Some crystals in nature are born from solutions, such as salt crystals obtained by evaporation of sea water. Some crystals are formed under certain pressure and temperature, such as mineral crystals formed after volcanic eruptions and magma cool down.

Two common methods for making crystals

Reduce moisture

——That is, air-drying a certain solution causes the water to evaporate, allowing the substance to re-precipitate.

Reduce the temperature

——That is, first heating a solution of a certain substance to make a saturated solution, and then cooling it to re-precipitate the substance.

Make a big crystal

Using a large glass, make a cup of concentrated salt water solution.

Strain this solution into a clean glass.

Suspend a thin string in the cup, tie a small salt crystal to the lower end of the string, soak it in the solution, and let it sit for a few days.

The first batch of crystals will first appear at the bottom of the glass. Filter out the remaining crystals in the solution. Continue to immerse the crystals hanging on the thin wire into the filtered solution. The crystals will grow slowly.

If you continue to pour the salt solution into the cup, the growth of the crystals will continue for weeks or even months.
