Description
"Crystals under a Magnifying Glass" Tiny World PPT
Part One: Beautiful Crystals
There is not only the wonderful insect world around us, but also a wide variety of material world.
Have we paid attention to the structure of various substances?
If we use a magnifying glass to observe the materials around us, what can we find?
Use the naked eye to observe salt, sugar, alkaline noodles, and MSG granules. What do they look like?
Using a magnifying glass to observe them, what surprising discoveries do we make?
What do the particles of salt, sugar, alkaline noodles, and MSG we observe under a magnifying glass look like? Do all particles of the same substance have roughly the same shape?
Draw the shapes of salt, sugar, alkaline noodles and MSG under a magnifying glass.
Particles of salt, sugar, alkaline noodles, and MSG are all solids with regular geometric shapes. People call such solid substances crystals.
Crystal PPT under a magnifying glass, part 2: making crystals
How are crystals formed?
Some crystals in nature are born from solutions, such as salt crystals obtained by evaporation of sea water. Some crystals are formed under certain pressure and temperature, such as mineral crystals formed after volcanic eruptions and magma cool down.
We can try to make salt crystals by evaporating water.
Make some concentrated solution of table salt, edible alkali or monosodium glutamate, and use a dropper to drop a few drops on the glass piece. After the water evaporates naturally, use a magnifying glass to observe the traces they leave on the glass piece to see what they look like.
Draw what the crystal you made looks like under a magnifying glass!
Extension activity: Make a large crystal
Using a large glass, make a cup of concentrated salt water solution. Strain this solution into a clean glass. Suspend a thin string in the cup, tie a small salt crystal to the lower end of the string, soak it in the solution, and let it sit for a few days.
The first batch of crystals will first appear at the bottom of the glass. Filter out the remaining crystals in the solution. Continue to immerse the crystals hanging on the thin wire into the filtered solution. The crystals will grow slowly. If you continue to pour the salt solution into the cup, the growth of the crystals will continue for weeks or even months.
