While Mary was writing a letter, the children were playing outside.

While I was playing computer games, my father called me.

(2) before and after

Before introduces a time adverbial clause, indicating that the action of the main clause occurs before the action of the subordinate clause, and after introduces a time adverbial clause, indicating that the action of the main clause occurs after the action of the subordinate clause. like:

I will give you a call before I leave New York.

You can go out for a walk after you finish your homework.

(3) until

until introduces a time adverbial clause, indicating that the action expressed by the predicate verb of the main clause continues until the action expressed by the predicate verb of the clause occurs. Its common structure is not... until... which means "until... (start)...". like:

We waited until the rain stopped.

The boy didn’t go to bed until his mother came back.

(4) as soon as

The introductory clause as soon as means that as soon as the action of the subordinate clause occurs, the action of the main clause will occur immediately, which means "as soon as...as soon as...". like:

I will write to you as soon as I get to London.
