"Language in use" Western music PPT courseware
Objectives:
1. To practice exclamatory sentences and alternative questions
2. To practice the expression of preference
Observe the following sentences.
1. What a beautiful city!
2. Do you like traditional Western music or pop music?
3. Is this by Strauss or Mozart?
4. Listen to those drums!
5. It’s so beautiful!
6. Is it by the father or the son?

10. How carefully she is writing!
Look at the following sentences.
---Is this by Strauss or Mozart?
---It’s by Strauss.
--- Do you like traditional Western music or pop music?
--- Well, I like both.
Questions that provide two or more alternative answers are called multiple-choice questions.
The or in the choice question can be connected to different contents, such as two nouns (the father or the son), two verbs (call or email), two prepositional phrases (by bus or by car), proper nouns ( Mozart or Strauss) etc.
In spoken English, the intonation of a choice question should be a rising tone for the first choice and a falling tone for the second choice.
More examples:
Would you like coffee, tea or soda?
Would you like coffee, tea or soda?
Should I call or email you?
Should I call you or email you?
Did you come here by bus or by car?
Did you come here by bus or by car?
Exclamatory sentence
When we want to express a stronger emotion, such as joy, admiration, surprise, anger, disgust, etc. Generally use falling intonation when reading.
Observe these three sentences carefully:
It’s so beautiful!
I love his music!
What a beautiful city!
We find that these sentences fall roughly into two categories.
the first sort:
It’s so beautiful!
I love his music!
That’s my favorite song!
This type of exclamation sentence has no difference in sentence structure from declarative sentences, except that the period is changed into an exclamation mark and the tone becomes stronger.
In this type of sentence, we use exclamation points to express the tone of exclamation in written language, and in spoken language, we use the tone of speaking to express strong emotions.
Category 2: Two major sentence patterns
1. What + (a / an) + adjective + noun + (subject + predicate)!
This is the basic structure of an exclamatory sentence with a noun as the center word and what as the determiner.
①The central word is a singular countable noun preceded by an article. Such as: What a clever boy (he is)!
②The central word is an uncountable noun with no article before it. Such as: What fine weather (it is)!
③The central word is a plural noun with no article before it. Such as: What beautiful flowers (they are)!
2. How + adjective / adverb + (subject + predicate)!
This is the basic structure of an exclamatory sentence with an adjective as the central word and how as an adjective or adverb modifier. like:
How kind you are!
How fast he runs!
Summary
1. Choose a question sentence: connect two or more parallel contents by or
2. Exclamatory sentences are sentences that express strong emotions such as joy, anger, sorrow, and joy. Commonly used sentence patterns:
