In this lesson, we will learn to find approximate numbers. Through some examples, students will understand what is an exact number and what is an approximate number, know how to use rounding to find the approximate number of a number, and be able to solve practical problems.

The quantity of some things in life is sometimes not expressed by an exact number, but only by a number that is relatively close to it. Such a number is an approximate number.

When approximating to the hundreds digit, first look at the number in the tens digit. If the tens digit is 5 or a number larger than 5, add 1 to the digit before the mantissa, and then change all digits of the mantissa to 0.

When approximating to the tens of thousands, first look at the number in the thousands. If the number in the thousands is 4 or smaller than 4, just round off the mantissa and rewrite all the mantissas as 0.

Use the "rounding" method

1. As required, first determine which digit the number is reserved to, and omit the mantissa behind it.

2. If the number in the highest digit of the mantissa is 4 or smaller than 4, round off the mantissa and rewrite all digits of the mantissa to 0;

If it is 5 or greater than 5, add 1 to the previous digit of the mantissa, and then change the mantissa to 0.
