During the Spring and Autumn Period, Qi and Lu were neighboring countries. Duke Xianggang of Qi was debauched and tyrannical, and his younger brothers, Prince Xiaobai and Prince Jiu, were afraid that they would be implicated, so they left Qi to avoid trouble. In 686 BC, the young master Xiaobai fled to the state of Ju; the ministers of Qi killed Duke Xiang and made Gongsun Wuwu the king of the country. The young master Jiu fled to the state of Lu. The next year, Gongsun Wuwu was killed, and both Xiaobai and Jiu prepared to return to their country to become kings. The state of Lu sent troops to escort the young master Jiu back to the state of Qi. Duke Huan of Qi sent troops to attack the Lu army escorting Gongzi Jiu. The Lu army was defeated and Gongzi Jiu was forced to death.
