A great realist poet in the Tang Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Lotte, and in his later years he was known as Xiangshan Jushi. Ancestral home in Taiyuan (now south of Taiyuan, Shanxi)

Bai Juyi's poems are famous for their popularity and simplicity, and are said to be popular among old ladies, soldiers and monks. There are nearly 3,000 white poems in existence, and his number should be considered the highest among poets in the Tang Dynasty.

"Viewing the Cutting of Wheat" is a poem written by Bai Juyi when he was the county captain of Zhouzhi County and he was inspired by the hard work and poverty of the local people. The work criticized the heavy taxes that caused the people's poverty. He feels deeply guilty that he has no merit, no virtue, and no work, but he can have enough food and clothing, which shows the humanitarian spirit of a conscientious feudal official.

This poem was written in the second year of Yuanhe (807), the second year of Emperor Xianzong of Tang Dynasty, when the poet was thirty-six years old.

Men go to the fields before dawn; women get up and do housework first, then cook; grandsons follow grandma and mother to the fields when they deliver meals. They were supposed to work with the men after dinner. Do you think this family is busy?

Summarize:

In this narrative poem, the poet describes with his own eyes the scene of farmers working hard to cut wheat in the heat, and uses the woman's words to reflect the severity of tax exploitation and the hardship of farmers' lives at that time. He felt deeply ashamed that he "didn't work in farming" but had "an official salary of three hundred shi", and expressed his sympathy for the farmers.

Later, he was reinstated to the position of Minister of the Ministry of Rites, where he participated in the discussion to save trouble. He resigned and went into seclusion, but failed to attend repeated calls. There was a severe drought in Guanzhong in the second year of Tianli. He was appointed as the Prime Minister of Taichung in Shaanxi Province to handle disaster relief. He died of overwork and illness. Most of his sanqu describe the pastoral and secluded life after abandoning officialdom, showing dissatisfaction with the darkness of officialdom. He is also good at poetry, including "Yunzhuang Leisure and Self-Adapted Small Yuefu" and "Yunzhuang Lei Manuscript". His works have a wide range of themes and their styles are clear and bold.

Zhang Yanghao, who had experienced the ups and downs of the officialdom, was tired of the official life and abandoned his official position to return home. However, when he learned that the people in Guanzhong were in danger, he resolutely accepted the order and served as the Prime Minister of Taichung during his trip to Shaanxi Province to provide relief to the victims, so he passed through Tongguan. Later, he became ill due to overwork and died in his post. Zhang Yanghao was full of deep sympathy for the people and had a strong sense of urgency.

Content analysis

With a profound historical perspective, it reveals an irrefutable truth: "When prosperity occurs, the people suffer; when it dies, the people suffer!"

No matter how feudal dynasties change, it is still the innocent people who suffer disasters in their battles for cities and land. The feudal regime was built with the bones of countless common people; its collapse also had the bones of countless common people as its burial objects.
