Viewing the Sea PPT, Part 2: Introduction to the Author

Cao Cao (155-220), whose courtesy name was Mengde and whose nickname was Ah Mao.

He served successively as general, prime minister, and king of Wei. He died in the 25th year of Jian'an. His son Cao Pi proclaimed himself emperor and pursued the title of Emperor Wu. A statesman, military strategist and outstanding poet in the late Eastern Han Dynasty.

Representative poems include "Stepping out of Xiamen", "Xing Hao Li", "Dan Ge Xing", etc. The "Three Caos" in literary history refer to Cao Cao, Cao Pi, and Cao Zhi. Cao Cao's Yaai poems are good for Yuefu hymns. Twenty-one of them are preserved today. His works include "Collection of Emperor Wu of Wei", which has been lost.

His poems and prose are clear, neat, majestic, generous and sad. They express his political ambitions and reflect the suffering life of the people in the late Han Dynasty.

Selected from "The Collection of Cao Cao".

Yuefu

The so-called Yuefu in the Han Dynasty is the name of an official office, which refers to a music institution. It is mainly responsible for producing national ceremony music, that is, turning the poems of literati to praise virtues into music scores and producing and performing new songs and dances. In addition, it also collects folk songs and puts them into music.

Yuefu poems of the Han Dynasty generally have no titles, and the title "Viewing the Sea" was added by later generations. It turns out that Yuefu poetry can be sung.

The last two lines of the poem, "Fortunately, I sing to express my ambition" were added when the music was combined. They are attachments to the poem and have no connection with the content of the poem.

Viewing the Sea PPT, Part 3: Writing Background

"Guan Cang Hai" is a famous poem written by Cao Cao. During the Jian'an period of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cao Cao used Xu You's plan to defeat more with less, and defeated his main rival in the north, Yuan Shao. The remnants of Yuan Shao fled to Wuhuan (a minority regime on the Liaodong Peninsula at the time), hoping to gain support from Wuhuan in order to make a comeback. Cao Cao took advantage of the victory to pursue and conquer Wuhuan. In the 12th year of Jian'an in the Eastern Han Dynasty, that is, 207 AD, Cao Cao waved his whip to the north and was invincible, defeating Wuhuan. On the way back, Cao Cao climbed Jieshi Mountain to view the magnificent scenery of the sea. At this time, Cao Cao was full of ambition and high-spirited, so he wrote the poem "Guan Cang Hai".

Viewing the Sea PPT, Part 4: Literary Clearance

To the east is the Jieshi to view the sea.

Go east and climb Jieshi Mountain to see the vast sea.

Where is the water/dandan, and where are the mountains and islands?

The sea is so wide and mighty, and the mountain islands stand high on the seashore. (I stood on the top of the mountain, and the waves in my heart were undulating like ocean waves.)

Trees/clumps, grasses/luxuriant.

The trees and grass are lush and thriving.

The autumn wind is bleak, and the waves are rising.

The autumn wind blows the trees and makes a sad sound, and huge waves rise on the sea, rolling and roaring (seemingly trying to swallow up the universe).

The journey of the sun and moon, if it comes out of it;

(The sea, what a broad mind) The rise and fall of the sun and the moon seem to come from the heart of the sea.

The starry sky is brilliant, as if it comes out of it.

The brilliant stars in the Milky Way also seem to emerge from the embrace of the sea.

Fortunately, I can sing to express my ambition.

I feel so lucky to be able to use this song to express my ambition.

Guancanghai PPT, Part 5: Article Understanding

1. How many meanings does this poem have?

Level 1 (first two sentences): Describe the location for viewing the sea

Level 2 (3--8 sentences): Describe sea water and mountain islands.

Level 3 (9--12 sentences): It expresses the spirit of the sea swallowing up the sun, moon and stars.

*The last two sentences are appendices, added for the sake of harmony and have nothing to do with the content of the poem.

2. Which word is the whole poem started with?

The whole poem is led by the word "Guan", and the following is expanded by the word "Guan".

Appreciation of the original text

Example: To the east is Jieshi to view the sea.

The opening chapter explains the direction, location and object of observation. Although these two sentences do not directly mention people, we seem to see the heroic posture of Cao Cao when he climbed the mountain and looked at the sea. The word "Guan" governs the whole poem and is the clue of the poem. The following is expanded from the word "Guan" to describe what you see while climbing the mountain.

3. Analyze the artistic conception expressed in "The movement of the sun and the moon seems to come out of it; the brilliant stars seem to come out of it".

These four sentences are the poet's peculiar imagination, describing the magnificent scene of the sea swallowing up the sun and the moon, and embracing the stars. The poet integrated his high-spirited spirit into the poem, allowing us to appreciate the poet's broad mind and grand ambition.

Purpose: Use the majestic scenery of the sea to express your ambition to unify the world and make contributions.

Viewing the Sea PPT, Part Six: Summary

1. This Yuefu poem expresses the poet's broad mind and high spirit. It expresses the grand ambition to unify China and make great achievements.

2. This poem has a broad artistic conception and powerful momentum, which is consistent with the demeanor of an ambitious politician and military strategist. Reading his poem is like seeing the person himself.
