Part One: Getting closer to the author

Cao Cao, courtesy name Mengde, was born in Qiao County, Peiguo (now Bozhou, Anhui). A statesman, strategist and poet in the late Eastern Han Dynasty. In the fifth year of Jian'an, Yuan Shao, who had a strong army and a vast territory, was defeated in Guandu. After that, he gradually unified the north. In the twelfth year of Jian'an, he conquered Wuhuan in the east and achieved great success. The following year, he led his army south and was defeated by the coalition forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei in Chibi.

He was good at poetry and used old Yuefu titles to express his political ambitions. He was majestic, generous and desolate, and also reflected the suffering life of the people in the late Han Dynasty.

Yuefu Poetry Yuefu Poetry refers to the poetry of the Han Dynasty that was collected and preserved by the imperial Yuefu system or the music management agency equivalent to the Yuefu function.
