His birthplace is generally believed to be Qinglian Township, Changlong, Mianzhou, Jiannan Road, Tang Dynasty, and his ancestral home is Tianshui, Gansu Province. An outstanding romantic poet in the Tang Dynasty, he was hailed as the "Immortal of Poetry" by later generations. As famous as Du Fu, he is known as "Li Du" in the world. The style of his works is bold and elegant, and his imagination is strange. His representative works include "Thoughts on a Quiet Night", "Listening to the Flute in Luocheng on a Spring Night", "About to Drink", "The Road to Shu is Difficult", etc.

Poetry Interpretation

Emeishan Moon Song

Li Bai

The half-moon autumn moon in Mount Emei,

The shadow enters the water flow of Pingqiang River.

poetry translation

The semicircular autumn moon hangs on the top of the tall Emei Mountain, and its shadow is quietly reflected in the slowly flowing Pingqiang River. I took a boat at night from Qingxiyi and went straight to the Three Gorges. I miss you but can’t see you, and reluctantly go to Yuzhou.

Summary of main themes

This poem depicts a beautiful night scene of Mount Emei through the description of what he saw while sailing on a moonlit night, and expresses the poet Jiang's longing for his friends.

Key Appreciation

This poem was written by the young Li Bai when he first left Shu. The whole poem has a clear artistic conception, simple language and smooth phonology. The poem begins with "Emei Mountain Moon". The word "Autumn" not only points out that autumn is the season for traveling far away, but also describes the beauty of the moonlight. It is easy to pick it up, which is natural and clever. The moon is only "half round", which reminds people of the beautiful artistic conception of green mountains spitting out the moon. In the second sentence, "shadow" refers to the shadow of the moon. The two verbs "in" and "liu" form a linking predicate, which means that the shadow of the moon reflects into the river and flows away with the river.

Life experience tells us that no matter how the river flows, the shadow of the moon does not move. Only when viewers go down the river can they see the wonderful scene of "shadows entering the river water". This sentence not only describes the beautiful scenery of the Qingjiang River reflected in the moon, but also highlights the boating on the autumn night, creating an ethereal artistic conception. Emeishan - Pingqiang River - Qingxi - Three Gorges - Yuzhou, the five place names are used together, creating a sense of rapid space flow, making people feel that the boat is fast, and expresses the emotion of separation without leaving a trace.

Du Fu (712-770), whose courtesy name was Zimei, also known as Shaoling Yelao, was known as Du Gongbu, Du Shaoling, etc., and was a native of Gong County, Henan Province (now west of Gongyi, Henan Province). A great realist poet in the Tang Dynasty. Du Fu was revered as the "Sage of Poetry" by later generations, and was called "Li Du" together with the "Immortal of Poetry" Li Bai. Most of his poems reflect reality and worry about the country and the people. They are called "history of poetry" and have a melancholy style. His representative works include "Three Officials" ("Xin'an Officials", "Shihao Officials" and "Tongguan Officials") and "Three Farewells" ("Newlywed Farewell", "Elderly Farewell" and "No Home Farewell"), "The Thatched House Broken by the Autumn Wind" ""Wen Guanjun took over Henan and Hebei", "Spring Night Happy Rain", etc.

Poetry Interpretation

The Year of Li Gui in the South of the Yangtze River

Du Fu

It is common in Prince Qi’s house.

Cui Jiutang heard about it several times before.

It is the beautiful scenery of Jiangnan,

See you again in the season of falling flowers.

poetry translation

I often saw your performances in Prince Qi's Mansion, and heard your singing many times in front of Cui Jiutang. Now is the time when Jiangnan is in full bloom. (Unexpectedly) I will meet you again in this season of falling flowers.

Summary of main themes

This poem expresses the poet's desolation about the rise and fall of the Tang Dynasty and his lament for each other's current situation by recalling his past contact with Li Guinian and describing the scene of their reunion in reality.

Key Appreciation

Li Guinian was a famous singer during the Kaiyuan period. At that time, princes and nobles generally loved literature and art. Du Fu's talent was appreciated by King Li Fan of Qi and Cui Di, the eunuch of the palace, and he was able to appreciate Li Guinian's singing in their mansions. Decades later, they met again in Jiangnan. At this time, the Tang Dynasty, which had suffered from the Anshi Rebellion for eight years, had turned from the peak of prosperity to decline, and their later life was also very bleak. Du Fu wandered to Tanzhou, and Li Guinian lived in the south of the Yangtze River. The meeting under such circumstances naturally triggered the infinite vicissitudes of life that had been simmering in Du Fu's chest.

Extracurricular ancient poetry recitation PPT, the third part: Marching for nine days and thinking about Chang'an hometown

Author business card

Cen Shen (about 715-770), a frontier poet in the Tang Dynasty, was born in Jiangling (now Jingzhou, Hubei Province). He was the great-grandson of Cen Wenwen, a hero of Emperor Taizong's reign. He later moved to Jiangling. Cen Shen was lonely and poor in his early years, so he studied with his elder brother and read all the historical records. In the third year of Tianbao (744 years), he became a Jinshi. At first, he led Cao's troops to join the army. Later, he served in the army for two frontier fortresses. First, he served as Gao Xianzhi, the chief secretary of the shogunate during the Jiedushi period in Anxi. In the last years of Tianbao, he appointed Chang Qing as the military envoy to Beiting, Anxi, and as the judge of the shogunate. He died in Chengdu in the fifth year of Dali (770).

Cen Shen's poems are good at seven-character songs. His representative work is "Baixuege Sends Magistrate Wu Back to the Capital". Three hundred and sixty poems exist. He has a close feeling for the scenery of the frontier fortress, military life, and the cultural customs of ethnic minorities, so he has many excellent frontier fortress poems. The style is similar to Gao Shi, and many descendants call him "Gao Cen". There are ten volumes of "Cen Can Ji", which have been lost. Today there are seven volumes (or eight volumes) of "Cen Jiazhou Collection" in existence. "Complete Poems of the Tang Dynasty" is composed of four volumes of poems.

Poetry Interpretation

Marching for nine days and thinking about my hometown in Chang'an

Cen Shen

Strong desire to climb high,

No one brought wine.

Pity the chrysanthemum in my hometown from afar,

It should be opened near the battlefield.

poetry translation

On September 9th, the Double Ninth Festival, I reluctantly climbed to a high place and had a distant view. However, during this war-torn march, no one could bring me wine. I miss the chrysanthemums in my hometown in Chang'an from afar, but now they are probably blooming sporadically on this battlefield.

Summary of main themes

This five-character quatrain expresses the poet's worries about national affairs and his concern for the suffering of the people during the war by describing the poet's climb up and looking far into the distance on September 9th, the Double Ninth Festival. This is a simple, profound and thought-provoking lyrical masterpiece.

Key Appreciation

The word "climb" in the first sentence is closely related to the "nine days" in the title. The word "strong" at the beginning expresses the poet's desolate situation during the war. The second sentence uses an allusion from Tao Yuanming. The opposite meaning here is that although I reluctantly wanted to go up to the heights to drink according to the custom, but during the war, there was no one like Wang Hong to bring wine to cheer up. This sentence follows the previous sentence, the connection is natural, and it is written as clearly as words, making people not realize that it is an allusion. Precisely because of the clever use of allusions here, it can arouse people's various associations and speculations: What is the reason for "no one brings wine"? This implies the specific environment of the "march" in the title.

Extracurricular ancient poetry recitation PPT, the fourth part: Listening to the flute in the city at night

Author business card

Li Yi (748-about 829), a poet of the Tang Dynasty, whose courtesy name was Junyu, was born in Guzang, Longxi (now Wuwei, Gansu). He later moved to Luoyang, Henan. In the fourth year of Dali (769), he was a Jinshi. He was first appointed as the captain of Zheng County, but he was not promoted for a long time. Due to frustration in his official career, he abandoned his official position and wandered around Yanzhao. He is famous for his frontier poems and is good at quatrains, especially Qijue. His representative works include "Three Songs under the Fortress" and "Listening to the Flute in the City at Night".

Poetry Interpretation

Listening to the flute in Shoujiang City at night

Li Yi

The sand looks like snow in front of Le Feng.

The moon outside the city is like frost.

I don’t know where to blow the reed pipe,

In one night, all the people were sent to their hometown.

poetry translation

The sand in front of Hui Le Feng was as white as snow, and the moonlight outside the city was like autumn frost. I don't know where the melancholy reed pipes were blowing, and all of them looked at their hometown overnight.

Summary of main themes

This is a poem that expresses the nostalgia of the border soldiers. Through the unique scenery of the frontier fortress on a moonlit night, the poem expresses the strong homesickness and sadness of the border soldiers (including the flute player) from multiple angles.

Key Appreciation

The first two sentences of this poem describe a unique scenery of a frontier fortress on a moonlit night: Looking into the distance, tall beacon towers stand on the hills that wind for dozens of miles. Under the beacon tower is an endless desert, illuminated by the moonlight. Like a snowy wasteland. Looking closer, the moonlight outside Gaocheng is as bright as the frost in late autumn.

The desert is not a snowfield, but the poet says it is "like snow". The moonlight is not autumn frost, but the poet says it is "like frost". The poet uses his pen in this way to use this cold scenery to exaggerate the sadness and desolation of his mood. It is this snow-like desert and frost-like moonlight that make the night in Shoujiang City seem particularly empty and bleak. It also made the poet particularly strongly feel the loneliness of being in such an isolated place, and developed a feeling of homesickness.
