Part 1: Comparing hot and cold water

If there are two glasses of water, which one is hot? Which cup is cold? Can we feel it by touching it with our hands?

There are four cups on the table. Cup No. 1 contains cold water, cups No. 2 and 3 contain warm water, and cup No. 4 contains hot water. We first insert our two hands into cup No. 1 and cup No. 4 respectively and compare the water contents in the cups. Hot or cold, and then immediately insert both hands into cup No. 2 and cup No. 3 respectively to compare the hot and cold water in the cup.

Look carefully at the construction of the thermometer, as well as the scales, markings, and numbers on it.

Observe the glass bulb at the lower end of the thermometer and the thin glass tube connected to the glass bulb. Do common thermometers have such a structure?

Things you need to know before using a thermometer:

1. Is this a Celsius thermometer? That is, is the unit of temperature in degrees Celsius?

2. How many degrees does each scale on the thermometer represent?

3. What are the highest and lowest temperatures it can measure?

Which angle should we choose to observe the reading on the thermometer as the measured temperature?

The hot breath exhaled from the mouth can cause the liquid column in the thermometer to rise. How should we breathe when we get close to the thermometer to read the temperature?

When observing the temperature, the line of sight should be at the same level as the liquid level of the thermometer; all unfavorable factors that affect the accuracy of the temperature measurement should be eliminated as much as possible.
