Part One: Summary

The writing project of this unit belongs to the outline in the narrative style category of the new curriculum standard. An outline is a simple statement of the theme of an article. It summarizes the theme of the original article in the most concise language, allowing readers to have a brief and summary understanding of an article. The summary mainly includes summarizing the main points, main supporting details, and overall evaluation of the original text.

Ⅰ.Pre-writing

(Ⅰ)Learn to write after the model

On 7 December, 2015, Tu Youyou was awarded a Nobel Prize for her discovery of artemisinin, a life-saving drug for malaria.

Tu Youyou majored in medicine in university and later studied Chinese medicine with experts in the field.

In 1969, Tu Youyou was given the mission to set up a team to find a cure for malaria. When worldwide scientists failed to find a cure using modern chemicals, Tu Youyou turned to Chinese herbs for help.Despite their limited resources and hundreds of failed experiments, they found a possible chemical. In order to test the medicine, Tu Youyou and her team tested the medicine on their own bodies. They finally discovered the most effective drug to cure the disease.

Although Tu Youyou has won the Nobel Prize and become well-known, she is uninterested in fame and prefers to continue her research.

The Admirable PPT, Part 3: Writing Skills

1. Stylistic requirements

The summary should be only one-third or one-quarter of the length of the original text; the summary should be completed entirely in your own words and do not quote sentences from the original text; the summary must fully and clearly demonstrate the information contained in the original text so that your readers do not need to flip through it You can fully grasp the original meaning of the material by reading the original text.

2. Writing requirements

Delete details and keep only the main points; turn long descriptions into compound sentences; avoid repetition: In the original text, in order to emphasize a certain topic, the argument may be repeated. However, those highlighted restatements should be deleted from the summary; first-person statements in the article are usually converted into third-person statements in the summary.
