Introduction to Wang Xizhi

Wang Xizhi, courtesy name Yishao, was a famous calligrapher in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. He was originally from Langxie (now Linyi, Shandong) and lived in Shanyin, Huiji (Shaoxing, Zhejiang). From official to general of the right army, he was an internal historian of Kuaiji and was known as "Wang Youjun". When Wang Xizhi was twelve years old, his father taught him the theory of brushwork. When he was a child, he learned calligraphy from Mrs. Wei, a famous female calligrapher at the time. After that, he crossed the Yangtze River and traveled to famous mountains in the north, learning from everyone's strengths. He learned from Zhang Zhi, a master of cursive calligraphy, and learned from Zhong Yao in his official calligraphy. Observing and learning the "methods of gathering together people to prepare a family", reaching the height of "Guiyue Group's products are the best in ancient and modern times". Later generations respectfully called him the "Sage of Calligraphy".

Characteristics of Wang Xizhi’s calligraphy art

Wang Xizhi's calligraphy changed official script into regular script, pushed running script to its peak, changed Zhangcao into modern script, and laid the foundation for regular script and running script of Chinese characters.

Compared with the Han Dynasty and the Western Jin Dynasty, the most obvious characteristics of Wang Xizhi's calligraphy style are his delicate brushwork and changeable structure. Wang Xizhi's greatest achievement was to add to or detract from the ancient method and transform the simple calligraphy style of the Han and Wei dynasties into a graceful, elegant, gorgeous and luxurious calligraphy style.

Wang Xizhi's famous works are all exquisite works. The cursive script is thick and eclectic, the main script is clever and dense, and the running script is powerful and natural. People say that the calligraphy is "floating like floating clouds, as powerful as a startling dragon."

In short, Wang Xizhi introduced Chinese character writing from practicality to a state that pays attention to technique and taste. In fact, this is the awakening of the art of calligraphy, marking that calligraphers not only discovered the beauty of calligraphy, but also were able to express the beauty of calligraphy. Almost all later calligraphers copied Wang Xizhi's calligraphy. In the history of calligraphy art, Wang Xizhi has a high status.

How to appreciate calligraphy works

To appreciate the wonderful interest and elegant charm of a calligraphy work, we must understand the following three points:

Lines are the essence of calligraphy art.

Form and spirit are the elements of calligraphy art construction.

Qiyun is the soul of calligraphy art.

Appreciation of Wang Xizhi’s calligraphy works

Wang Xizhi's running script was unique at the time, and later generations commented that "Youjun's calligraphy is a change from the ancient method. Its majestic style is natural, so it is regarded as a follower in ancient and modern times." The representative work is "Lanting Preface".

Regarding "Lanting Preface", there are many interesting anecdotes circulating in the world. It is said that Wang Xizhi wrote this preface quickly with silkworm cocoon paper and rat whisker pen while he was intoxicated with wine. After finishing writing, he was very satisfied with this work and rewrote several articles, but they could not reach this level, so Just leave it to your descendants as a family heirloom. Later, it fell into the hands of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty. Emperor Taizong admired Wang Xizhi's calligraphy so much that he ordered his ministers Zhao Mo, Feng Chengsu and others to carefully copy some copies. He liked to give these copies or stone rubbings to some royal families and favorite officials, so at that time, such copies, which were "first-class authentic works", were also "Luoyang paper expensive". In addition, there are also copies of famous works by Ouyang Xun, Chu Suiliang, Yu Shinan and other famous artists handed down to the world. It is said that the original works were used as burial objects when Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty died.
