Part One: First Lesson

Zhu Ziqing (1898-1948), whose original name was Zihua and whose courtesy name was Peixian, was a native of Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province. He was an essayist, poet, scholar and democracy fighter.

There are poetry collections "Traces", "Miscellaneous Notes on European Travels", and some literary and artistic works, which are collected in "Collected Works of Zhu Ziqing". Famous proses include "Moonlight over the Lotus Pond", "Spring", "Green", etc.

writing background:

"Back View": Written in October 1925, this article is the author's recall of the past eight years ago. In the winter of 1917, the author's grandmother passed away, and his father, Zhu Hongjun, was dismissed from his post as director of the Xuzhou Tobacco and Liquor Sales Bureau. The phrase "misfortunes never come singly" in the article refers to these two things. The author was 20 years old at the time and was studying in the Philosophy Department of Peking University. When he learned that his grandmother had passed away, he rushed from Beijing to Xuzhou and returned to Yangzhou with his father for the funeral. After the funeral, my father went to Nanjing to find a job, and the author returned to Beijing to study. Father and son said goodbye at Pukou Station.

Prose refers to a literary and artistic genre that uses words as its creative and aesthetic object. It is a genre form in literature.

1. In ancient Chinese literature, prose is opposite to verse and parallel prose, and rhyme and neat sentence structure are not pursued. This is prose in a broad sense.

2. In modern Chinese literature, prose refers to a literary genre parallel to poetry, novels, and dramas. This is prose in the narrow sense.

2. What is the clue of this article? Who do you mainly write about? What is the theme reflected?

3. Read the text again, use the "back view" as a clue to divide the paragraph levels and summarize the meaning of the paragraphs.

segmented learning

1. Under what background did my father and I meet? Please find sentences from the text that describe the background of the meeting and summarize them in concise language.

Grandma passed away and father lost his job.

The family situation is bleak, the father and son parted

2. This article expresses the father's love for his son by writing "I" parting with his father at the station. Why write the second and third paragraphs that seem to have little to do with this?

These two paragraphs describe the family situation when the father and son parted, creating a sad atmosphere for the "back view" and paving the way for highlighting the father's love for his son. At that time, my grandmother passed away and my father lost his job. It was really a disaster that never came singly. My father was short of money to pay off his debts, so he had to sell off his pledges; he needed money for funerals, so he had to borrow money. One can imagine the situation at home. As soon as the funeral was over, the father and son had to leave home and go their separate ways. It was really a loss of life and a broken family. It is even more touching that the father, despite carrying a heavy mental burden, still takes care of his son meticulously.

3. The author expresses "father's love" through the special perspective of "back view". How many times does the article describe the father's back view? Under what circumstances are the figures from behind? Summarize it in concise language.

<1>Thinking about the back——Missing my father

<2>Looking at the back - looking at my father to buy oranges

<3>Farewell - father and son parting

<4>Thinking about the back - missing you after farewell

Back view PPT, part 2: second lesson

segmented learning

Read paragraphs 4 and 5 and think:

1. "Actually, I was already 20 years old at that time and had already traveled to Beijing two or three times, so it wasn't that important anymore." Does this sentence indicate that the author believes that there is no need for a father to send his grown-up son off in person?

no. This comment shows that the author felt from his father's "hesitation" that his father always cared for "me" as a child.

2. The author first said, "I was really too smart back then," and then said, "I think about it now, I was so smart back then." What does "smart" mean here? What are these two sentences talking about? What kind of feelings does “I” express?

The two words "smart" here both mean confused, which is aimed at: my father negotiated the price with the porter, and "I" always felt that his speech was not very nice; my father asked the owner to take good care of "me", and "I" secretly laughed at him for being pedantic; He thinks that he has grown up and can take care of himself, so his father does not need to be too careful. It expresses "I"'s self-blame for not understanding my father's affection at that time.

3. What things written in these two paragraphs reflect the father’s careful care for his son?

(1) Because my father was busy with work, he asked someone to send "me" off. He told me again and again and was very careful;

(2) Although something happened, I finally decided to send it off in person;

(3) Pick a chair for "me" next to the car door;

(4) Tell "I" to be careful on the road, to be alert at night, and not to catch cold;

(5) He also asked the waiter to take good care of "me".

My father's loving heart is really touching.

Intensive reading and exploration

Which back view do you think is the most touching and best reflects a father’s true love for his son?

The most touching back view:

The second back view - the back view of Mao Ju

Why is the back view of my father buying oranges the most touching?

On the one hand, because my father’s back view happened under a special background, that is, my grandmother passed away, my father was unemployed, the family was in a bleak situation, and the father and son parted, the atmosphere at that time was very sad. On the other hand, because the author's description of this back view is the most detailed and vivid.

Thinking: This paragraph is the core of the whole text. What are the words in it that express the father's difficult actions?

Words that express the father's difficulty in moving include "stumbling", "leaning out slowly", "climbing", "shrinking", "the fat body leans slightly to the left, showing an effort", etc.

Thinking: It’s so hard for the father to buy oranges, why must he go alone instead of letting his son go? After buying the oranges, what kind of psychology does he express "as if he felt very relaxed"?

The father loves his son very much, but he feels happy that his son has to suffer so much. After buying oranges, the father felt that he had fulfilled his responsibility to take care of his son. His son would not suffer from thirst during the journey, and he felt satisfied and happy.

"I quickly wiped away my tears. I was afraid that he would see it, and I was afraid that others would see it." What are the two "fear"s in the article, what are they afraid of? What kind of feelings does the son express?

Afraid that my father would be sad to see him;

Afraid of being embarrassed by others.

Expressing the son's guilt towards his father.

Language of taste:

Please find four sentences that the father said while sending his son to the car, and understand their meaning.

<1>It doesn’t matter, it’s not good for them to go!

<2>I'm going to buy some oranges. You stay here, don't move around.

<3>I’m leaving, let’s write a letter over there!

<4>Go in, there is no one inside.

Back view PPT, the third part of the content: Class summary

The author of "Back View" is good at capturing the most expressive image features in specific situations to depict characters and express emotions. I chose the image feature of the "back view" of my father when he crossed the railway to buy him oranges, and described it in detail, thus fully expressing the close affection between father and son at that time, and achieving a touching artistic effect.
